I think Garrison's essay could equally have been titled "There is no going back" but I'm still waiting for someone, anyone, to propose alternatives.

Where is the Democrat small-l liberal Project 2029 manifesto? Nowhere, because they are bereft of ideas and/or bereft of the will to implement meaningful change. Substackers bemoan the "red-pilling" of young men in the recent election cycle and the people that "let Trump in because they opted out of voting due to Gaza" but fail to face the fact that they did these things because they KNOW the system is rigged against them and doesn't work any more.

This isn't the audacity of hope, it's the nihilism of despair.

This isn't voting for change you can believe in, it's voting against a status quo that's intolerable.

It's concentration camp prisoners storming the fences in the face of machine gun fire because any change, even death, is better than the now and any perceived future.

Where are the alternatives?

The Democrats are doomed for many reasons. Not least the fact that their top brass are ancient and so entwined within the system they are simply incapable of responding to Trump and co's sledgehammer-esque dismantling of the system.

They're the wrong people at the wrong time.

I was just reading Curtis Yarvins BS to friends the other day and there's a shocking amount of things like 'Jew-Eating Crocodiles are bad because Jews pay taxes.' Like it was completely unnecessary. No one was asking. He just couldn't help himself.

Anyhow, shits bad. I am literally just. Ugh.

Although the trolls are out, I think that the political crises we're facing now is part of the larger change in technology. Trivial factual matters have become just a question of "Hey (Siri, Google, Alexa) what is the name of that song I half remember a lyric to.

So too then people think that complex systems have a go to answer. And that things that might makes sense on a small scale, must again work in aggregate. I.E. Government is too big and I don't like paying taxes so slash the stuff I don't easily understand.

In the meantime people are watching tech slowly but inevitably change our everyday interactions. In highschool people didn't believe self checkout could work because people would just steal things. Now it's a fact of most large stores I go to.

Cash has been phased out for cell phones and cards, at one point a computer was nifty and now I've got 3 screens at my desk. Music, movies and other art have been stripped to the bone. And we'd be lying to ourselves if we said people don't notice.

I believe we need to implement 4 major changes so that people feel safe in their place in society, universal rights to healthcare, housing, food, and information. Without advocation for these things for EVERYONE the feeling that we're all out for ourselves and left to the wolves leaves room for strongmen who will tear things up and be cheered on.

Fellow Canadian posting. Frankly, is it too much to ask for a left wing counter coup at this point?

Expand full comment

From who?

We have seen, from 2016 onwards, what happens to anyone even close to the left who dares protest for simple things like "The police shouldn't assault or kill so many black and minority people" to "My university should stop funding Israel's destruction of Gaza".

Heck, Trump himself got police and security forces to batter the hell out of people purely so he could stand in front of a church and hold a book he's never read (and wouldn't understand if he did).

I can't see where a counter-coup would come from sadly.

No, you're totally right; I'm 100% daydreaming tbh :( I also hate saying it, but I think self defense and focusing on community stability might be a necessity. Robert made an aside in a BtB or ICHH podcast about the State as an entity being surprisingly fragile, and...yeah. Damn.

Thank you for this. I'm not an accelerationist, but I'm not sure there is a way to manage the crumbles. Time will show what breaks first and what breaks worst. I suspect acceleration is here whether we like it or not.

I can’t read this I’m going to throw up & there’s no real way out that isn’t a whole lot of people die

I totally agree with everything here and also . . . Americans are really super duper weird. We truly have no clue what is going to happen next. Which is SO destabilizing.

There may not be 20th century precedent, but...this is starting to look to me like 1851 France and Napoleon III. Been reading Victor Hugo's *Napoleon the Little* and...parts of it are very much like the present day. Which means we are looking at a very different world ahead of us.

This is the most hilariously misinformed article I've read in awhile. Completely educated on a false understanding of government, fraud, waste and abuse. It's like it was written by a high schooler whose parents spend all day watching CNN and The View. I can't stop shaking my head at the sophistry.

I'm curious how you think this is "hilariously misinformed" - have you talked to any government officials, provided any citations for your work? After presenting your sources, have you done any critical analysis of what those sources were saying? If anything, after reading "high schooler" essays, I've spent more time asking students the questions I'm currently asking you than outright dismissing a student's examination of a complex situation after they've done extensive amounts of research to get to that point.

If your mental processes have led you to believe that this article is anything but puerile pablum from a EDS and TDS-addled brain, there’s nothing I could do to educate you and I wouldn’t waste the time to do so. When people use language like “coup” to describe a COMPLETELY LEGAL process of auditing a federal agency and the hyperbolic “coup” language is employed because the person has consumed fake news for a decade regarding “Orange Man Bad™” then their—and by extension your—take on this is completely illegitimate and laughable. But, hey, as long as it gives you purpose and makes you think you’re part of The Resistance™, then keep on trucking. The rest of us live in the real world.

Cute. Well, when your citrus-colored idol figures out how to bring down the price of eggs and actually deliver to the working class, then you can come back here and gloat to me about something tangible. For now, I'll just sit back with my own EDS-addled body and continue writing stories, and hope I don't get shot for just existing. (Because, that's what resistance is, at the end of the day. Staying alive in spite of people who want you dead.)

I have no desire to fight with you, and understand that you don't have any better way to deal with the pain of betrayal when your needs aren't being met by an administration that never even had them in mind when they solicited your vote. Because, like you, I live in the real world and know of no one whose needs are actually being met right now. Be well.

Can you tell me what laws grant Elon Musk the authority to audit these agencies?

Expand full comment

Not just this, how was the audit of such massive volumes of data audited so quickly? Or is Musk saying "USAid is evil" enough of an audit, no proof needed?

I seethe realizing these cowardly clown ass fucks are being allowed to do this with such impotent pushback from those elected to "uphold" laws and government. These tech fucks have been able to get away with everything, while facing no pain in response. That needs to change..

This is a HMS dreadnought of an article.

I cant go back and listen to podcasts or read stories from even 6 months ago on what might or what even could in the realm of fantasy happen after the election and inauguration as they are now so wildly inaccurate of what has happened so quickly and so blindingly forward that it could be parody.

This article lays clear, with easy to follow and verifiable references from the rare moments outlets have looked into this growing elephants foot and blinked... That this is not a 'temporary' or 'wild' situation. This is planned, has been planned, has been funded, and is now being enacted.

This article should be widely shared, and Garrison should be proud of this reporting. I think a lot of articles that try to frame the current reality try very hard to frame it in what once was, like the naval yards of old post Dreadnought. This article lays out facts bluntly, without the room for interpretation that larger 'media' outlets refuse to close on... As leaving everything vague is now an evolutionary survival tactic.

Thanks
