this sucks. i hate you have to write this, i hate i have to read this. i hope the general public isnt receptive to this wave of fascist demagoguery. if one trans person being a mass shooter is reason enough to demonize the whole community, what does that say about the myriad of right wing shooters?

Thanks, all. I fear we're entering a new age where online right-wing disinfo must be addressed in real-time in order to keep the ship afloat. Your timely work here is appreciated.

Thanks for the write up, y'all.

I live in Nashville, and this disaster is the last thing we needed right now.

The anti trans rhetoric is already so strong and pervasive, and the fact that this happened in our city means the lives of the already-embattled trans members are going to get even worse.

The Christian victimhood is also very strong here, so that's going to ramp up as well.

I bet MNPD will get more funding, too.

How much more fucked up death will inevitably result from this already horrific fucked up death? Like... could we just not? We in the general sense, like people. Humanity. America. Could we just sit this one out?

Sometimes I feel like I can predict the future and I fucking hate it.

Stay safe everyone

Thanks for this. I know how painstaking it is to do it, and do it well.

The trans population in the Hate States seems slow to realize the realities of their situation. What is happening now in those States is being driven by a meme, not reason; and the anti-trans influencers aren't listening to anyone who disagrees with them. The people who listen to *them* are becoming radicalized against us by the unrelenting portrayal of us as delusional at best and demonically-inspired at worst.

This would normally have gotten much, much worse as the 2024 election approaches. Many of the laws being passed in the various Hate States will not survive Constitutional muster; but judicial review takes time -- years, in fact, as cases work their way up the chain. In the meantime, how many trans people, minors especially, will be faced with the combined stresses of gender dysphoria and increased hostility from the societies around them?

And now, this horror in Nashville. It is obvious what this will do, is already doing, to the public mood.

For weeks, I have been advocating that people with trans family members leave the Hate States a.s.a.p. What's coming there will be similar for trans people to living under a jihadist regime. The more perceptive among us saw the signs themselves already, and began leaving at least a year ago.

As a community, we need to help those who find it truly impossible to leave on their own. Volunteers are more important than money; and the obvious organizational structure to use is PFLAG, which can be found in every state. This isn't like the underground railroad of pre-Civil War days; assisting trans migration isn't illegal, and we don't have to hide it.

To individuals living in these States, it's time to stop screwing around. In Nazi Germany, there were Jews who fled early, Jews who fled late and Jews who didn't flee and ended up enslaved, massacred or both. Those who remained lost all their possessions; what good did their wealth do them? The sooner you pick up and relocate, the sooner you can start over.

The storm isn't coming. The storm is already here, and it will only get worse. Don't be the proverbial frog in the pot of slowly boiling water.

Wake up.

Might be worth mentioning the fingerprints (and money trail) of Guo in the recent boosting of right wing bullshit peddlers.the Christian fascist movement’s media wing is primed and educated in the generation of stochastic agitprop; they are going to do this maneuver every time.

Thank you for getting this out so quickly. I saw a single newscast/press conference and of course had no idea they’d misgendered the shooter or how swiftly the right-wing disinformation campaign ramped up (it’s really breathtaking, every time).

The Nashville mayor and police said something else I just have to comment on. They said “we don’t expect this to happen when we send our kids to school.” That is fucking bullshit. Read a parenting subreddit sometime. We expect it DAILY. We go about our days with severe cognitive dissonance, a little thrum of terror playing in the background while we got to meetings, clean, learn, work, and do all the things. We are thankful everyday when we pick them up without someone deciding that today is the day they lash out and cauterize their pain with the heat of a bullet passing through the barrel of a gun aimed at our children’s hearts.

100% agreed. I want to add that the immediate reflex to use this tragedy for their own agenda, seems to focus attention away from the victims completely. No prayers anywhere to be found.

Also I cannot wrap my head around the levels of stupidity and see-through-almost-not-even-try-to-hide-it-bad-faith-ship and intellectual laziness that is apparent in the anti-trans comments. Why do we have to go through this performance every time, again and again? Just say: ‚we’re in the middle of creating a new Sündenbock, so we have new group of people to round up and torture, as soon as we can. Because every good fascist state needs its own Sündenbock. Thank you, shooter, for this splendid gift. We don’t even have to extend our t&p’s (thoughts and prayers) to the victims‘ families anymore. Nobody believed that shallow shit anyway.‘

So I have to say thank you for doing this grinding work of reading that utter bs and relentlessly fighting it. I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the post. Luke Rosiak’s name is typoed twice as “Rosika.”

Not to mention the fact they tried to claim the Uvalde shooter was trans as well and was promptly debunked. They cry wolf and then get giddy the one time they're right.

I first read about this on the front page of this morning's NY Times processing my morning coffee. Another school shooting sickens me. How this is being spun sickens me. And I'm sickened by their refusal to honor his pronoun. What do all of these have in common? GUNS.

But they didn't go there, did they? No, not at all. It's immediately "hormones" or "being LGBT". And then have the audacity to say we need MORE GUNS? Really? What about all those other shooters? Especially those that shot up LGBT nightclubs. Were those guys on hormones? I know several trans men taking testosterone and none of them seemed homicidal.

I'm not particularly "anti-gun" I own a few guns myself, safely locked away. And I trained my children on gun safety when they were young (but did NOT buy them one). I do not have assault rifles, large caliber pistols, or any large capacity magazines. Never had any desire for those, except perhaps the larger capacity sometimes when reloading at the shooting range (out again!?!) That said, in many, if not most cases, the shooter would have been denied guns and/or ammunition if existing laws and checks were enforced. So why can't we do that? Close these loopholes and ensure reasonable background checks are performed. They can wait a few days to pick up that pistol. And they can leave assault rifles at registered shooting centers -- don't need those on your deer hunt. I'd even allow those for registered collectors provided they have training and proper secure storage as long as they didn't also start collecting large quantities of ammunition to go with them.

To return to how they're trying to spin this, I'm already abused enough by the "Great Christian State of Tennessee" in not being permitted to have an updated birth certificate. Their refusal is literally subjecting me to their religion thereby stomping on MY religious freedom. Why is theirs more important than mine? The latest legislation is making me rather reticent to visit my family that still lives in that state. Although all of my ID matches my appearance, it would be technically possible for them to look up my original birth certificate, decry me a deviant, strip me from my right to vote, and take away my freedom. Just because of a single character on a single item on a single piece of paper written over 60 years ago. Doesn't seem like something Jesus would have advocated to me.

blows my mind that they’re all for guns and when a trans person holds up a sign about self defense it’s a “radical” and they’re framed as the shooter

We're seeing more and more hate against Trans folk down here in Australia too. Last week a Liberal MP in the state parliament of Victoria went to an anti-trans rally. Nazis showed up. Were protected by cops. The MP was called into the party leaders office, threatened to be kicked out of the party, but then when it went to the Liberal party room they only suspended her for 9 months. She walked out of the party room with a smug smirk on her face and then promptly tweeted to the anti-trans activists who she had recently denounced as part of her trying to save her own skin that she had not in fact denounced them. Shits fucked up. Stay safe out there people.

Keep fighting the good fight against blatant misinformation, although one can't help but feel it's a losing battle in the US.

Coming from Australia, it's really hard to understand why measures as simple as gun control aren't implemented. And yes I know, forgive me... How dare I suggest Americans have their God given right to guns taken away.

You all seemed very proud of the research you quickly did online and were diligent not to misgender the shooter. I wish you had done enough background work to correctly pronounce the word “covenant” and also Dr Koonce’s name. After all, these - and not the trans community - were the victims in this tragedy.
